Exploring Sustainable Practices in the Sri Lankan Hotels / Hospitality Sector

Sri Lankan hotels are increasingly adopting innovative, eco-friendly practices, making the island a leading destination for sustainable tourism. From eco-lodges nestled in the wilderness to beach resorts prioritizing low-impact living, the hospitality industry here is showing the world how sustainability and comfort can go hand in hand. Here are some of the key sustainable initiatives you’ll find across hotels in Sri Lanka:

Solar Energy Utilization: Many hotels in Sri Lanka are reducing their carbon footprint by harnessing solar power for energy needs. Solar panels help power lighting, heating, and air conditioning, significantly cutting down on fossil fuel consumption.

Water Conservation Systems: Several hotels have installed rainwater harvesting systems and water-efficient fixtures. These systems help conserve water, which is especially crucial during the island’s dry season.

Eco-friendly Waste Management: Sri Lankan hotels are making great strides in minimizing waste. Many have embraced composting and recycling, while some resorts go a step further by eliminating single-use plastics, encouraging guests to use refillable containers, and sourcing sustainable products.

Local Sourcing of Food and Materials: The farm-to-table movement is growing across Sri Lanka, with hotels supporting local farmers and fishermen. Sourcing fresh, organic produce locally helps reduce the environmental cost of transportation and supports local communities.

Biodiversity Conservation: In the scenic areas of Sri Lanka, hotels partner with wildlife organizations to protect local flora and fauna. Eco-lodges often build structures that preserve the natural habitat, blending into the landscape rather than disrupting it.

At Mon Ami City Hotel, we have taken sustainability to a new level by integrating upcycling into our core design. A staggering 80% of our hotel is crafted from upcycled wood and waste glass, turning discarded materials into beautifully designed spaces. The unique wooden décor and glass fixtures are a testament to our belief in reducing waste and creating a warm, eco-friendly atmosphere for our guests.

Our collaboration with Katana Upcycle also reflects this vision. Not only do we use upcycled stationery for our records, but we also offer these eco-friendly products to our guests, allowing them to take home a piece of sustainability. At Mon Ami, sustainability is more than just a practice it’s our way of life, where every detail speaks to our commitment to the environment while ensuring comfort for our guests.
